How to learn gold trading.
A step-by-step roadmap for beginners, from what moves the price of gold to building a process you can repeat. With gold's busiest hours in Indian time.
Why traders learn on gold
Gold (XAUUSD) is one of the most actively traded markets in the world. It moves enough to show clear structure, and it regularly runs obvious highs and lows before choosing a direction. That makes it a good market to learn structure and liquidity on, as long as you respect how fast it can move.
Step 1: Know what moves gold
- The strength of the US dollar
- Interest-rate and real-yield expectations
- Inflation data, such as US CPI
- Geopolitical risk and demand for safety
- Central-bank gold buying
Step 2: Learn the basics properly
Before any strategy, learn how candlesticks show the open, high, low and close, what the spread costs you, and how trends are defined by higher highs and higher lows. These are Modules 1 and 2 of the TRUSTINFX course.
Step 3: Read market structure
Mark swing highs and lows. Learn the difference between a break of structure, which confirms the trend, and a change of character, which warns that it may be turning. See the definitions on our Learn page.
Step 4: Find the liquidity
Stop losses cluster above obvious highs and below obvious lows. Gold often sweeps these pools before the real move. Learning to spot sweeps and inducement keeps you from entering too early.
Step 5: Work top-down
Set your bias on the higher timeframe, find the area of interest, then refine the entry on a lower timeframe. Module 10 covers this.
Step 6: Fix your risk rules first
Decide your stop loss, position size and maximum loss per trade before you enter. Gold can move several dollars in seconds around news, and spreads widen at release times.
Step 7: Trade the right hours (IST)
| Session | Opens in IST (Apr to Oct) | Opens in IST (Nov to Mar) | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tokyo | 5:30 am | 5:30 am | Quieter for gold. Useful for JPY pairs. |
| London | 12:30 pm | 1:30 pm | Volume picks up. Gold and EUR, GBP pairs become active. |
| New York | 5:30 pm | 6:30 pm | US data and the London overlap. Usually gold's busiest hours. |
| Major US data (8:30 am New York) | 6:00 pm | 7:00 pm | CPI and Non-Farm Payrolls. Expect fast moves and wider spreads. |
Times shift by an hour when the UK and US change their clocks; the exact switch dates differ slightly between the two countries. India does not use daylight saving.
Step 8: Practise, journal and review
Practise on a demo account, record every trade with a screenshot and the reason you took it, and review weekly. Most improvement comes from the review, not from more trades.
Common beginner mistakes
- Trading during major news without a plan
- Moving the stop loss when price comes close
- Taking too large a position because gold "always comes back"
- Copying signals without understanding the setup
- Revenge trading after a loss
